Metabolism/Gastroenterology/Endocrinology/Renal

Stem cells therapies represent a new field of biomedical science which could provide in the future the cure for diseases until now incurable. The Gastroenterology lectures are designed to enhance the current knowledge of healthcare professionals and provide reviews of key biological properties of stem cells with focus on hepatic gastrointestinal stem cells and their current clinical applications. Potential stem cells therapies have been suggested from animal model trials in acute liver failure, inherited metabolic liver disease and endstage liver disease (cirrhosis). Hematopoietic autologous stem cells transplantation has already been successfully performed in patients with severe inflammatory bowel disease or patients with refractory celiac disease. Future stem cells therapies for gastrointestinal postoperative or Crohn's disease fistulas are currently under investigation. Research for perfecting stem cells harvesting protocols from different sources, in vitro expansion and differentiation protocols which can be used in phase II and III clinical trials is described.

Lectures include topics in endocrinology and kidney diseases. A major challenge in Regenerative Medicine, in particular the field of organ regeneration, is improvement of current therapies coupled with discoveries of new approaches to treat patients suffering from diabetes which together with hypertension represent major causes of Chronic kidney disease CKD and initiation of dialysis in the United States. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a prevalent condition (8 to 16%) associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality . CKD can progress towards end-stage renal disease (ESRD), requiring renal replacement therapy and it has a tremendous impact on quality of life and life expectancy of affected individuals. Therefore, it is imperative to develop therapeutic interventions to prevent, alleviate, or decelerate progression of diabetes and renal failure. Current treatment modalities often fail to target the major underlying contributors for progression of renal disease. Importantly, the kidney possesses intrinsic regenerative capacity that allows the organ to recover after limited insults. Unfortunately, this regenerative potential is limited under chronic conditions. Treatment strategies that boost cellular regeneration might therefore offer good alternatives for patients to produce the desired cell types expanding the treatment options for patients with aggressive diseases such as diabetes and Chronic kidney disease.
